Playdate Offers A Developer Update Ahead Of 2020 Shipments

The folks over at Panic Inc. have offered up an update for Playdate before the pocket console launches in 2020, including a new step in the process. The company announced they will be holding a Developer Preview, in which they are going to ship developer units to company as soon as they can. The goal in mind is to allow them to create games for the future, so Playdate has more titles on the way beyond the set they already promised those who have purchased it. We have more info on that below, but you can read the full update here.

Now, if you're not a developer, these early Playdates won't be useful at all. They'll have no games to play, and do absolutely nothing out of the box. But for game developers, though, they're the best way to test real Playdate games!

Very soon, we'll put these Developer Preview units up for sale. We'll e-mail our developer mailing list when it's time. And since we can only make so many, we'll randomly select a number of recipients. Any developer can order, and credit cards won't be charged unless you're selected. Then, we'll ship them out, provide access to our SDK and support forum, and do all we can to help devs out.

(We'll also be setting aside a significant number of units for underrepresented developers, and developers who may not be able to afford a Playdate today. More details to follow.)
