Arkane On Why Prey Took The Franchise Name Despite Not Being Linked To The First Game
There has been a few pieces of media that have taken the name of a franchise and completely reworked it. Prey is a pretty extreme example though with the themes barely seeming to touch the first game in the franchise.
It seems that the game got its name genuinely because Bethesda had it lying around, and Arkane liked it. Speaking to GameSpot, developer at the studio, Raphael Colantonio, said that the ties to first game were quite surface level.
First of all it's hard to find a name for a game, and it's a good name, sounds good. I think the association that people have about Prey is that it's about aliens on a space station, and it's a first-person game. When we were done with Dishonored, part of the team did Dishonored 2, and the other part… we wanted to do another one of those games that we usually do, which are in first-person, with depth and simulation and narration, all that.
This time we wanted to make it on a space station, with aliens, and you had to survive with the full ecology, etc. As we started it, the name was available, and the connections were easy to be made. We just thought, 'Okay, makes sense,' so there we go.
And you know what? That is fine by me. The old game doesn't really have much clout nowadays, and it likely wasn't getting used after the failed sequel. Plus it is a nice to the point name, so why not use it?
