Xbox Thinks Console Generations Are Dead And Ongoing Iterations Are The Future
I'm yet to be sold on the idea of' console iteration'. Console's are enjoying great sales at the moment, but with PlayStation Neo and Project Scorpio, both Sony and Microsoft seem to be ready to adopt a mobile phone approach of constantly upgraded hardware that are supported for a few generations.
Well, it seems Microsoft really are set on the model, going as far as to suggest traditional console generations are being phased out. Speaking to Engadget, Aaron Greenberg, head of Xbox Game Marketing, said that iteration is likely Microsoft's future. He said:
For us, we think the future is without console generations. We think that the ability to build a library, a community, to be able to iterate with the hardware — we're making a pretty big bet on that with Project Scorpio."
We're basically saying, 'This isn't a new generation; everything you have continues forward and it works.' We think of this as a family of devices.
Again, this is a complicated one. It seems like it could be a push to just sell more hardware more frequently, but at the same time, technology is going faster and faster and hardware has to update to match that. Also, we don't really have an official look at how any of this will work, so this is all speculation. If both console makers get this wrong though, it could explode in their faces.
