I remember when I was in my early teens coming across a movie called Time After Time. It was made in 1979 and based on the novel by Karl Alexander. It stared Malcolm McDowell as H.G. Wells and David Warner as Dr. John Leslie Stevenson. The premise was deceptively simple: What if the reason Jack the Ripper was never caught was because he escaped by using a time machine made by H.G. Wells? In the story Wells follows Stevenson (The Ripper) 86 years into the future for the sole purpose of bringing him back to justice.
Here is the original trailer for the film.
That trailer would not have gotten me to see the film, but by just stumbling across it one day on TV led me to watch the whole thing. It opened up my eyes to science fiction that wasn't in outer space. Sadly though, over the years I found few people who knew of the film. I'd mention it and usually get people talking about the Cindi Lauper song or the Christopher Reeves film Somewhere In Time.
Now, Kevin Williamson is adapting the story for television and ABC has picked it up. It stars Freddie Stroma and John Bowman and looks to follow the original story pretty well. But I'm not sure how it will be able to stretch out for more than a season. It's all about capturing Stevenson / the Ripper. I look forward to seeing the show, but worry about the long term prospects.
