David F. Sandberg, Annabelle: Creation And Shazam! – That Lightbulb Moment At WonderCon
Mathew Quitney wites,
David F. Sandberg is the director of Lights Out and the upcoming Annabelle: Creation. He is also rumored to be attached to DC's Shazam.
A few annotated Q&As:
Q: You come from the world of short films. Do you have plans to adapt any of your work for features other than Lights Out?
A: Yes. I'm working on adapting Pictured and Cam Closer, and am scripting Pictured now. Annabelle gave me the chance to revisit an element from my short Attic Panic.
In the short, these light bulbs unscrew by themselves and I'd tried to accomplish it with CG and was disappointed. On Annabelle, the effects team was actually able to do practical bulbs that worked beautifully.
Q: I have a friend that refuses to see any horror films. Can you sell them on Annabelle: Creation?
A: I hear that from a lot of people. Then I wouldn't recommend seeing it if you get scared (laughs).
Q: Are there any comic book properties that you would like the opportunity to adapt?
A: Definitely. I'm lucky that Lights Out did so well, and that the studio liked it. There's a lot of exciting talk and I can't wait till things are announced so that I can talk about them.
Q: Does your wife have a cameo in this one?
A: She does. We're writing the scripts based on our shorts together.
Q: Is she your good luck charm?
A: Well, we work really well together. We've developed a shorthand from our shorts.
Q: What is the most challenging part of the horror genre?
A: For this particular film, the doll. You don't want her walking around like Chucky, so we had to find creative ways to do it. Scares and making things tense is hard. You have to experiment a lot to get it right.
The trailer for Annabelle: Creation premiered at WonderCon. In it, you will see a quick shot of the lightbulb effect that Sandberg mentioned.
