Joel McHale In Talks To Play Woody In Russo Brothers 'Quantum And Woody' TV Show
Emmy Award winner and former Community star Joel McHale is in talks to play one half of Quantum and Woody in Anthony and Joe Russo's upcoming TV adaptation of the Valiant comic book series, according to a report at The Wrap.
McHale would play Woody Henderson, a streetwise womanizer who, along with his estranged and sober-minded African-American half-brother Eric, is granted explosive energy powers in a lab accident while investigating the death of their scientist father. But their new abilities come with one catch: as a result of the explosion, the brothers must now "klang" a set of wristmounted "control bands" together every 24 hours or dissolve into unstable energy. Now bound together despite their lifelong inability to get along, they decide to use their superpowers for good as Quantum and Woody, a generally inept pair of crusaders often labeled as "the world's worst superhero team."
The TV series, which is currently being shopped as a high-priority project at leading networks, would reunite McHale and the Russos, who previously worked together on several episodes of Community in the years before the brothers moved to Marvel Studios for major comics-based motion pictures, like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War.
Quantum and Woody's pilot script was written by Ant-Man's Gabriel Barrer and Andrew Ferrari, who are also expected to show run and will executive produce the series alongside the Russo Brothers and Valiant's Dinesh Shamdasani.
McHale joins an A-level list of casting choices for upcoming Valiant film and TV projects that is already rumored to include Jared Leto for Sony's big-screen Bloodshot adaptation and Dave Bautista for a still-secretive Eternal Warrior project.
Created by Christopher Priest and MD Bright in the mid-'90s, Quantum and Woody was one of the most acclaimed and subversive series of its day, deftly combining absurdist comedy, social commentary and superhero action in a way that earned it legendary status. Upon Valiant's return in the 2010s, the series was resurrected with creators James Asmus and Tom Fowler and the superhero duo will soon anchor a new monthly series under the rubric of Valiant's Icons initiative this December in Quantum and Woody! #1 by Late Show writer Daniel Kibblesmith and artist Kano.
Casting for Quantum and Woody's other half – Eric Henderson, AKA Quantum – is expected to follow soon. Stay tuned for details as they develop.
