Star Wars: Justin Theroux Confirms the Master Codebreaker's Romance with Maz Kanata
One of the best throwaway lines from Star Wars: The Last Jedi is when Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong'o) implies that she had a romance with the Master Codebreaker that she sends Finn and Rose off to find. Finn and Rose end up not recruiting him, but DJ instead — however, we do see him in the casino of Canto Bight. He was played by Justin Theroux, and when Yahoo was interviewing him for his new Netflix movie Mute, they decided to ask if it was true that Maz and the Codebreaker had hooked up at some point.
"I can definitely confirm it," he says, chuckling. "That happened — she's a bobcat!"
That is fantastic, and we demand no fewer than 10 issues of a comic dealing with this amazing romance that no one is talking about. Theroux couldn't confirm or deny that he'll be making another appearance in Star Wars, but he did have an idea:
"The Codebreaker will show up, in an embrace with Maz Kanata."
Theroux also talked about being on the set and how he wished he could have taken some picture to remember but experience. However, he also knew better than to test Lucasfilm security by bringing a phone on set.
"I didn't know how addicted I was to my telephone until I was on that set! I wanted to take pictures so badly — not for publication, just to remember it. The sets and costumes were so incredible. But I remember thinking, 'I can't do that, because they'll chop your hands off if you bring a phone anywhere near that set.'"
That is probably a good idea, Mr. Theroux. The Master Codebreaker is still an interesting angle that maybe Lucasfilm will explore in a book or a comic.
Summary: Rey develops her newly discovered abilities with the guidance of Luke Skywalker, who is unsettled by the strength of her powers. Meanwhile, the Resistance prepares to do battle with the First Order.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson, stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Carrie Fisher, and Adam Driver.
