Lashana Lynch Talks About How She Reacted When She Got Cast in Captain Marvel

It's not uncommon for people who get cast in Marvel movies to have very extreme reactions when they find out they got the role. It's not uncommon for stars to talk about jumping up and down and losing their minds when they get the call. It wasn't any different for Lashana Lynch when she got the role for Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel. She told Entertainment Weekly that she started jumping up and down.

"I heard 'congratulations' and literally just dropped on the ground, crying in sobs of tears," Lynch says. "My friends were filming me, just jumping up and down."

She said that she immediately got much more practical about it and went to the drugstore so she could get some face wipes for her tear stained face. The entire situation was so surreal her friend had to remind to get her errand done so they could go celebrate.

"I saw CVS and I went, 'Guys, I need to get face wipes,'" Lynch recalls. "And [my friends] were like, 'What?' And I was like, 'I need face wipes and I need bin liners. I need trash bags.' So we went into CVS, and I was like, 'So, there's buy-one-get-one-free and there's a single pack, and I don't know which one to get….' And my friend was hitting me, like, 'Did you just get a freaking life-changing call, just now?! Like, get it together! Get the face wipes, and let's go have a drink!'"

Lynch plays a fellow Air Force officer with Brie Larson and like Larson Lynch also went to to talk to actual officers in the Air Force. She specifically asked to shadow pilots who are also mothers so she could accurate depict how that would work. She also got to fly "in a F-16 and got insight into everything from Air Force slang to how to properly put on a flight suit."

"I sat in their meeting, and they were talking about all this serious stuff," Lynch says with a laugh. "I was trying to make notes, but I was also like, 'Am I allowed to be here? This is, like, confidential. Is this classified?'"

Lynch seems to really appreciate this role and put in the work, along with Larson, to make sure that she accurately portrays a female Air Force pilot. The fact that Lynch specifically sought out pilots who are mothers shows is a great detail that shows how much thought she is putting into this.

Captain Marvel, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, will also star Brie Larson, Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Samuel L. Jackson. The film is set for release on March 8th, 2019.
