Madame Web: Keeping Cassandra "Grounded In Reality", Plus New TV Spot

Madame Web star Dakota Johnson wanted to make sure that even with her powers, Cassandra always felt human and "grounded in reality." Plus, a new TV spot.

Article Summary

  • Dakota Johnson aims to keep Madame Web's Cassandra realistic and relatable.
  • A new TV spot showcases Cassandra's powers, reminiscent of Tenet and Edge of Tomorrow.
  • Johnson highlights the challenges of reshooting scenes with a nuanced approach.
  • Despite potential chaos, Johnson's humor could become memorable Madame Web quotes.

We continue to be baffled by nearly every decision that Sony Pictures is making concerning Madame Web, but this studio is the same studio that had some hand in the SpiderVerse films, so maybe there is a little bit of hope. Cassandra's powers are something that we'll see presented on camera in a way that seems familiar to people who saw Christopher Nolan's Tenet a few years ago or maybe Edge of Tomorrow from Warner Bros. Sony released a new TV spot. We are starting to see her redo things to try and get them right the second time.

However, all of that insanity made it more challenging to keep everything straight in the actors' heads when you reshoot the same scene but do it slightly differently. Star Dakota Johnson spoke about how that took a level of trust in director SJ Clarkson combined with the fact that this was also some of the first acting she had ever done in front of a blue screen with a lot of VFX work. Johnson also wanted to ensure that even with those special effects and the ability to see the future, Cassandra remained fundamentally human and grounded, as she explained to Entertainment Weekly.

"It was really important to me that she's really human and grounded in reality, and that her life feels like, 'Oh, I can relate to that,'" Johnson adds. "Sometimes it's hard to relate to someone shooting lasers out of their eyes." The actress pauses, then smiles. "I mean, not for me," she deadpans. "I obviously do that all the time."

Look, this movie might be a mess, but Johnson has one hell of a sense of humor when she wants to, so if we get nothing else out of Madame Web in the next month, maybe we'll get some great one-liners from our leading lady for the memes.
