Rebel Moon Director Zack Snyder Wants To Focus On Original IP, Not DC
Rebel Moon director Zack Snyder has closed the DC Universe chapter of his life, has no desire to return, and would like to focus on original IP.
Article Summary
- Zack Snyder has shifted focus to original IP, leaving DC Universe behind.
- Snyder relishes creative freedom with Netflix despite Rebel Moon's struggles.
- The Atlantic confirms Snyder's aspiration for fresh, resonant projects over DC.
- Fans are urged to respect Snyder's move away from DC Universe towards new tales.
While reviews and early streaming numbers for Rebel Moon are not looking very good, director Zack Snyder is still living the dream that many other creatives work cut off a limb for the chance to experience. It takes a lot for someone to give you a blank check and complete creative freedom to do whatever you want, and that is what Netflix is giving the director right now. Whether or not that continues in the wake of Rebel Moon's underperformance remains to be seen, but right now, this is the high life.
However, even though Snyder has mentioned many times that he has closed the chapter on working within the DC Universe, people keep trying to drag him back to a world that would be more creatively restrictive than the one he is currently working within. The Atlantic recently did a profile on Snyder and once again told everyone that he isn't breaking down the CEO of DC Studios James Gunn's door because he is focused on original IP.
"I'm not knocking on James Gunn's door, going, like, 'Bro, shoot me one of those sweet movies,'" Snyder said. "The holy grail is some original I that you create, that has resonance and is cool."
Last month, Snyder gave his comic book movie wishlist should the best circumstances line up, and none of them seem to include continuing the universe that, as of last weekend and the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, has come to an end. Whatever you might think of Snyder's original IP like Rebel Moon or Army of the Dead, fans should want the person they idolize to be thriving, and Snyder can make the stories he's been dreaming of for years become realities.
We can continue to discuss Snyder's place within the culture of comic book movies and his influence and even ask him for his opinion on the current trajectory of the genre. However, Netflix isn't going to get the rights to SnyderVerse. The low streaming numbers for Rebel Moon are proof enough that the demand isn't nearly as big as the trending hashtags might make it appear, and Snyder wants to move on–so let the man move on.
Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire: Summary, Cast List, Release Date
A new universe awaits on Netflix starting December 22. From Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind 300, Man of Steel, and Army of the Dead, comes Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, a 2-part movie event decades in the making. After crash landing on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a stranger with a mysterious past, begins a new life among a peaceful settlement of farmers. But she soon becomes their only hope for survival when the tyrannical Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) and his cruel emissary, Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein), discover the farmers have unwittingly sold their crops to the Bloodaxes (Cleopatra Coleman and Ray Fisher) — leaders of a fierce group of insurgents hunted by the Motherworld.
Tasked with finding fighters who would risk their lives to defend the people of Veldt, Kora, and Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), a tenderhearted farmer naive in the realities of war, journey to different worlds in search of the Bloodaxes and assemble a small band of warriors who share a common need for redemption along the way: Kai (Charlie Hunnam), a pilot and gun for hire; General Titus (Djimon Hounsou), a legendary commander; Nemesis (Doona Bae), a master swordswoman; Tarak (Staz Nair), a captive with a regal past; and Milius (E. Duffy), a resistance fighter. Back on Veldt, Jimmy (voiced by Anthony Hopkins), an ancient mechanized protector hiding in the wings, awakens with a new purpose. But the newly formed revolutionaries must learn to trust each other and fight as one before the armies of the Motherworld come to destroy them all.
