Rian Johnson to Direct Daniel Craig in Original Murder Mystery 'Knives Out'
Rian Johnson is jumping back into the murder mystery genre before he takes on another Star Wars movie. According to Deadline distributors are currently bidding on a new movie by Johnson called Knives Out, and Daniel Craig is set to star.
The movie is set to start production in November when Craig was originally set to start work on the the 25th Bond movie. That production lost its director last month, so Craig has an opening in his schedule. Johnson has said that he has wanted to work with Craig for a long time.
"I have been a huge fan and always wanted to work with him and as I worked on the script, trying to get it right, Ram and I were wringing our hands over who could be the detective," Johnson said. "Then, serendipitously, we heard Daniel might have a small window, and it worked out. He's an actor of extraordinary range, and we are looking forward to the fun of finding that modern detective, and collaborating with Daniel on creating a new Poirot."
The script is already done and they have a very small window if they want Craig to star. The auction for this one is probably going to be one of the big things that people are going to be talking about going into the Toronto International Film Festival.
The film is best described as a modern day murder mystery in the classic whodunit style, infused with Johnson's original voice that informed films from Brick to Looper.
Deadline is also reporting that they are looking to fill out the cast with "set the six to eight major roles around Craig". Johnson has said that he's a huge fan of Agatha Christie and is looking to bring that kind of flare to Knives Out. There is currently no release date, but if this is a smaller production (which it sounds like it likely is) and with production starting so soon, maybe this one will hit the fall festival circuit next year.
