Tonight in the Super Bowl, the New England Patriots will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles, but according to a sketch on last night's episode of Saturday Night Live, the rivalry between New England and Philadelphia goes back much further than that. In a sketch mocking the accents and regional customs of Philly and New England, delegations from "The Patriots of New England" and Philadelphia, where "the Iggles are ready to fly," arrive at a gathering of the colonies to discuss the New England victory at the Revolutionary War Battle of Bunker Hill.
The other colonists are annoyed by the bragging of the New England Patriots, who say their wartime victories amount to a dynasty and applaud the skills of Captain Thomas Brady. Philadelphia, meanwhile, believes they could win a victory if given a chance, saying the city is "mad strong, from the little babies to all our mom moms and pop pops." The Philly delegation promises that Philadelphia will win, and then one of the delegation will punch a police horse.
The sentiment of the sketch echoes the way a lot of Americans feel about the Super Bowl matchup — "Is there any way they both could lose?"
