Star of Alita: Battle Angel Talks About How Important It Is to Show Dynamic Women
On December 21st there are going to be five options to see at the movie theater. That's a lot of big blockbusters for one day and one that people are a little nervous about is 20th Century Fox's adaptation of Alita: Battle Angel. The movie was originally set to open on July 20th of this year but was moved back to December back in February.
The L.A. Times got a chance to speak to star Rosa Salazar and director Robert Rodriguez at Comic-Con last month.
"It's important to show how dynamic women are in general," Salazar said. "She's so vulnerable. She leaps first. She has no regrets in that way."
For Salazar the appeal of this story came down to the journey that we get to see Alita take. A big blockbuster needs to make us care about the characters if we're going to get invested in the spectacle.
"She's really going through this journey leading from the heart and that gives me chills every time. … She's everything," said Salazar of her "Alita" alter ego. "She's not just one thing; she's everything, and that was the through-line for me."
Rodriguez went on to say that a role like this is usually about someone discovering their inner warrior but in this movie we're watching someone discover their humanity.
"It wasn't a very heartfelt character discovering their warrior spirit, it was the flipside — It was someone who was remembering and realizing she has a pure warrior spirit and is actually finding her heart."
Entertainment Weekly released a new image of Salazar as Alita.
An action-packed story of one young woman's journey to discover the truth of who she is and her fight to change the world.
Alita: Battle Angel, directed by Robert Rodriguez, stars Rosa Salazar, Eiza González, Jennifer Connelly, Michelle Rodriguez, Mahershala Ali, Christoph Waltz, and Jackie Earle Haley. It will be released on December 21st.
