Supergirl's James Olsen Will Get Off The Sidelines And Become The Guardian

mal_duncan_guardianWhile talking with multiple media outlets today, Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg announced that the character of James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) is going to get tired of being on the sidelines and take on the mantle of The Guardian.

In the comics, the Guardian has been multiple people, starting with Jim Harper and created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby back in 1942. The Harper version of the character has ties with Cadmus, an element that was introduced to the show at the end of last season. When Jack Kirby took over the Jimmy Olsen comic in 1971, he brought The Guardian and the Newsboy Legion into the series, renaming the hero Golden Guardian and making him the head of security for Cadmus.

Mal Duncan, a former member of the Teen Titans, took on the role in 1976, but his time as the Guardian was wiped away by Crisis on Infinite Earths. Most recently Grant Morrison introduced a new Guardian… more specifically the Manhattan Guardian… that was really Jake Jordan.

Kreisberg continued to say that Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) is against vigilantes, which will put the new Guardian and her at odds because Olsen doesn't tell anyone… except Win Schott (Jeremy Jordan) who play Felicity Smoak to his Green Arrow. Seems like keeping a secret identity from Supergirl will involve lots of fun things like a lead-lined helmet and voice changer… Brooks definitely has the physicality to be a believable vigilante.

There was some fan speculation a while back when John Diggle (David Ramsey) had donned a helmet in the field and was about to get a code name that he would be called Guardian, but it ended up being Spartan.

This news fits in with what appears to be a shift in the series away from Catco as a major location.
