The NBC Stephen Colbert Sitcom By Ken Finkelman That We Have Never Seen

On The Late Show With Stephen Colbert the other night, guest and Mad Men/Iron Man star John Slattery popped by to get something off a chest – a role that he missed out on to Stephen Colbert 20-25 years before.

That appears to be – well more like 14 years ago. An NBC sitcom pilot executive produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer via their company Imagine Entertainment and made in 2002

Intended to air in the 2002-03 TV season, it focused on the work and family life of a TV news producer. The untitled pilot was written and directed by Ken Finkleman, creator of the acclaimed Canadian series The Newsroom.

Played by Colbert, and as the clip above suggests, channeling Finkelman as the lead character, the pilot also starred Arrested Development's Judy Greer as Colbert's wife.

NBC didn't pick it up and instead went for those sure-fire famous hits Hidden Hills, In-Laws, and Good Morning, Miami.

But it does mean that somewhere it exists…
