Tony Gilroy Shares More Details About His Experience on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

For a long time it looked like we weren't ever going to get the full story as to what happened behind the scenes on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. We knew there were reshoots, we knew there were issues, and we know that there was a lot that was cut and changed as the movie made its way to theaters. Some of those of those issues came to light earlier this month when Tony Gilroy briefly spoke about the movie. As he said it was "two minutes of an hour long podcast" completely blew up. He recently spoke to Moviefone about how his comments.

"I think I probably said more than I said even there," he now tells Moviefone. "The 'Star Wars' community — the interest in it and the people in it — are so passionate. It's so gigantic, it's so dizzy. And perhaps someday, long from now, someone will get the entire story of what happened, and I'm not sure what the actual value of that will be, but I don't think there's really much here for me to talk about."

Gilroy says that he gives Kathleen Kennedy a lot of credit for handling the pressure of making a Star Wars movie in a world with a 24 hour new cycle that won't give you a moments peace.

"33 million live viewers staring over [your] shoulders, constantly in a town square, screaming about everything that's going on while it's happening. No one's ever had to do that before. No one's ever had to make movies like this before. It's a beautiful thing, it's a passionate thing, it's been an amazing thing, but it makes filmmaking really, really difficult."

While it was hard on the people on top it was hard on Gilroy, who reportedly spent nine months working on the film, and how difficult it was trying to work while the PR machine was trying to spin a story.

"Imagine somebody who's online, who is with absolute authority, turning everything that you're writing upside down and they say that's what you're doing. And that gets magnified by 28 million people who go, 'Oh my god! That guy must really know what he's talking about, or she must really know what she's saying because look at the authority with which she said it,' which is nothing! The idea of trying to run a marathon while someone's cutting you up to try and figure out what's going on inside your body is just impossible. Imagine if they had to do this on Gone With the Wind. It would've been really hard."

We're still here writing and asking about it despite the fact that Gilroy doesn't seem to keen to share many more details. That probably has something to do with a NDA but he's also not invested in the series. He knows that we care but, in the end, the behind the scenes stuff don't really matter. It won't change the movie we got and, aside from fans who just want more footage of those characters, knowing or seeing the details won't change a thing.
