Turn: Washington's Spies – A Look At The Upcoming Final Season

AMC is about to kick off the fourth and final season of the period drama Turn: Washington's Spies. The new season sees Benedict Arnold (Owain Yeoman) now part of the British army, promoted to Spy Hunter General, and after George Washington's (Ian Kahn) spies. Arnold has already betrayed Washington; now he's trying to put that behind him and make his name mean something more. Washington, on the other hand, is angry — this is personal now.

Another interesting focus on the new season is the use of the press. It was controlled by the British, but used by the spies to pass information. But more than that, you get to see that the struggle between printing the news and selling papers has been around since before the country was born.

Washington was a proponent of the free press, even though it was often used against him, while Arnold used the press to help shape his legacy. The British used it to keep the resistance down, while those wanting revolution used it to rally support.

The final theme of the season is "darkest before the dawn." Historically, we know that things were bad enough for the Americans to rise up against the British. But how bad? This season takes each character down a dark path before they can begin to see the light. Washington is at his lowest point, filled with doubt and knowing that a loss would mean his life and those of his followers. Everyone is on edge, trust is not a common commodity and it's all building to the climax of the Revolutionary War.

The series also stars Jamie Bell, Daniel Henshall, Seth Numrich, Heather Lind, Meegan Warner, Kevin McNally and Burn Gorman.

Turn: Washington's Spies Season 4 debuts June 17th on AMC.
