Warner Bros. Is Making A Gender-Swapped Lord Of The Flies Reboot
William Golding's classic novel Lord of the Flies is coming back to the big screen. Directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel have made a deal with Warner Bros. to remake the story with a twist: all of the students stranded on the island will be girls.
In an interview with schedule-obsessed Hollywood gossip rag Deadline, McGehee said that using girls instead of boys, as originally depicted in the book, "shifts things in a way that might help people see the story anew. It breaks away from some of the conventions, the ways we think of boys and aggression."
Seigel called the project a "faithful but contemporized adaptation" and said, "It is a timeless story that is especially relevant today, with the interpersonal conflicts and bullying, and the idea of children forming a society and replicating the behavior they saw in grownups before they were marooned."
Lord of the Flies has been adapted several times in the past, including a 1963 film directed by Peter Brooks which is well regarded, and a 1990 attempt by Harry Hook which is less so. There was also a 1975 Filipino adaptation by called Alkitrang Dugo. So we were about due for another remake anyway.
