Watch Footage From The Troubled Phantom Dust Reboot

Last month, we heard that Microsoft was taking developer Darkside Games off of the reboot of Phantom Dust, causing the studio to close down. We weren't given much of a reason, but it certainly put the future of the game in peril.

Kotaku have managed to get footage of Darkside's work though so now you can be the judge. This is a 1v1 multiplayer match and you can see how the game incorportaed card elements into a free flowing action game.

Kotaku's source form within Darkside said:

Originally the edict was to go 70% original game, 30% new. Over time that turned into 'remake Phantom Dust,' so that was our goal for the last half of development. We were going to update and streamline a very dated game (especially their menu system and horribly paced single player), but otherwise it was going to be a reboot/remake. I'd say we were probably trending towards an 85% remake, 15% new.

And honestly, I think that is the understandable death knell for the project. While the footage was incomplete and looks very much like the old Phantom Dust, that could be the problem. It's not just the menu systems that needed an update. The entire combat system did. It just seems out of place in the modern market.

That's not to say it is a bad thing, but I can see where Microsoft were likely coming from. They need to sell copies. I'm not sure this iteration of the game would have. I may have liked to have played this version of the game, but I can't see a mass market being into it.

That is a sweeping generalization though. This is just a small slice of footage of an incomplete game. Its also not lost on me that people were relieved of their job over this, so I won't heap on any more. I'd like to see more of what Darkside did on the game, but it is likely we will only hear about the game again after Microsoft have figured out what to do with the work already put in.
