Amy Poehler, Natasha Lyonne & Leslye Headland Bring Comedy To Netflix
Though the "Netflix Is A Joke" campaign is meant to show people that it's the home for stand-up comedy, the streaming service has forgotten about its slate of scripted comedy series. To that end, Netflix has given an eight-episode straight-to-series order for a still-untitled (previously Russian Doll) comedy series from Natasha Lyonne (Orange Is The New Black), Leslye Headland (Sleeping with Other People) and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation), with Lyonne attached to star. Headland wrote the pilot episode, and she and Lyonne will serve as series writers.
Co-created and executive produced by Lyonne, Poehler and Headland, the comedy follows a young woman by the name of Nadia (Lyonne) who finds herself on an "interesting" journey as the guest of honor at a seemingly inescapable party during one long night in New York City.
Cindy Holland, VP Original Content for Netflix, is excited to see Lyonne returning to Netflix to tell more stories:
"Natasha's humor, humanity and depth have connected with audiences around the world on Orange Is the New Black. With this new series, she, Leslye and Amy are creating an ambitious and uniquely formatted comedy that will have viewers guessing as much as they will be laughing."
For Lyonne, it was about working with those she respects in an environment that respects the work that they do:
"So excited to get cracking with the intensely brilliant Leslye Headland, the GOAT with a heart of gold Amy Poehler, and Netflix, the safe haven I've been searching for since the '80s. Deeply moved to work with such heavy hitters and to share our show with the world."
Headland sees this as another opportunity to tell bold, creative stories in a welcoming environment:
"These women are heroes of mine and to work with them at a company that promotes originality and creativity is a thrill."
Poehler's upcoming projects include co-hosting and executive-producing the upcoming NBC competition series The Handmade Project; and an animated comedy presentation at Fox with Mike Scully and Julie Scully.
Universal Television, Poehler's studio-based Paper Kite Productions, JAX Media and 3 Arts Entertainment are set to produce, with Brooke Posch representing Paper Kite Productions and Dave Becky representing 3 Arts Entertainment.
