Dummy Trailer Like Thelma & Louise But with Anna Kendrick and Sex Doll
Quibi released a new trailer for a comedy called Dummy. It stars Anna Kendrick, who finds out her boyfriend has a sex doll that starts talking to her. It looks like Lars and the Real Girl, but the similarities end there. They're both about a character going a little bit mental and thinking sex dolls are talking, but Dummy looks very strangely handled like it's a comedy that's really forcing the punchline. The official synopsis tells us this is the story of what happens when "an aspiring writer befriends her boyfriend's sex doll and the two take on the world together." So, it's a "road trip girl buddy comedy," with Kendrick and a talking sex doll. Right then. This is something I never dreamed I would be writing about, or even existing, but here we are.
Kendrick's characters and sometimes even personality falls into the modern "quirky girl" trope, which has endeared her to many fans. That being said, she has recently taken on a few "interesting" rolls. As an actor, you want to keep things fresh and keep branching out by taking roles different from the ones you've had before, and I've loved her foray into voice acting. In case you are wondering what animated film she's in, she's Princess Poppy in the Trolls franchise, and it is absolutely perfect. But this is a far cry from the happy rainbow land of animated trolls, and not exactly in a good way, I'm afraid.
Maybe you have a more open mind and are less terrified of talking dolls. If that's the case, please let me know how this latest Quibi monstrosity is because I will likely be passing on this. If Quibi's track record is any indication, it's likely to range from frustratingly boring to a criminal under-use of their big-name stars, though more likely falling somewhere in-between. On the off-chance that you're still hanging with Quibi and/or this nightmare fuel of a "movie divided into short bites" concept, Dummy drops on April 20. Not exactly the "4/20 binge" we were expecting, but I suppose that may make this series at least a tiny bit tolerable. If that doesn't make the nightmare fuel of a creepy talking sex doll watchable, I can't imagine anything that will.
