Golden Globes 2024: Taylor Swift Summed Up Our Feelings with One Sip
Some thoughts on Golden Globes 2024 host Jo Koy's monologue & performance - and how Taylor Swift summed up our feelings with one sip.
A couple of things to put out on the table first. As far as Golden Globes 2024 host Jo Koy goes, I had a pretty good opinion of him in the few things that I saw him in – a funny episode of MTV's Ridiculousness comes to mind. So when I heard that he was going to host the first awards ceremony under new management, it sounded like a pretty cool, safe move. What was even more impressive was that he was doing it with dramatically less time to prep for it than most hosts – a very important factor to keep in mind. With that in mind? Ouch. I mean… that opening monologue was painful. I'm not sure that I can remember hearing & seeing a captive audience turn on its host the way that the folks attending the Golden Globes did on Sunday night. And I can't blame them… and here's why that Taylor Swift moment was a perfect example of things going wrong..
When it comes to the overall hosting responsibilities, I will definitely defend Koy when it comes to the amount of time needed to prep. No doubt. But the monologue? Those are jokes – that's what Koy does for a living. I'm not sure "two weeks" is a strong enough reason – especially when you're not writing all of the jokes yourself (as we were reminded when Koy through the writers under the bus during an awkward acknowledgment that some of the jokes weren't quite hitting). Honestly, just to put it out there? If NBC's Saturday Night Live can put together an entire show in a week – with "Weekend Update" able to rip up its scripts for breaking news – then we should expect better than what we got. It's never a good thing when your host is making the presenters seem a whole lot funnier than some of them were (and social media asks why each presenter who steps up wasn't asked to host instead).
And that brings me to the Taylor Swift situation. A last-minute attendee who pretty much rewrote the rules when it comes to concert films & theatrical distribution with Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (and receiving nominations for her efforts), there were a whole lot of directions anyone could've gone joke-wise when it comes to Swift and her concert film. Again, they're jokes – and everyone's projects were getting jokes (whether they landed or crashed & burned). But then there was this: "As you know, we came on after a football doubleheader. The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift — I swear." Referring to the network's NFL game prior to the telecast (Philadelphia Eagles & New York Giants), Koy went personal with that little twist at the end, referencing Swift's appearances at NFL games in support of her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce.
Ironically, the best reaction that Koy would get from a room that seemed not to know what to do with the joke was from Swift herself – who glared while sipping from her glass. Okay, should Koy have told the joke from a comedic standpoint? That's not for me to say – it was Koy's creative call (though still not sure who penned it), so he owns it whether it hit or not. But if I'm the new owner of the Golden Globes and I'm looking to restore the integrity of not just the awards but the ceremony itself, I'm not sure I would want my host "going personal" on one of the biggest global entertainers going.
