Krypton Season 1: Our First Look at Blake Ritson as Brainiac

David S. Goyer didn't have to go far to find his Brainiac for the new Syfy series Krypton. The shows big bad will be played by Blake Ritson, who starred in Goyer's three-season historical fantasy Da Vinci's Demons as Girolamo Riario. USA Today released the first image of the actor in the full costume and makeup while Syfy released a video talking about the Collector of Worlds and how the inspiration for this version of the iconic Superman villain came from Geoff Johns and Gary Frank's take on the character in the comics.

Ritson talked about taking on the the comic book villain with USA Today:

I've played characters who've objectively committed monstrous actions, but feel entirely justified, as they've acted from a misplaced sense of a noble cause. Generally speaking, people cast themselves as the hero in their own narrative.

Yes, he traverses the universe in a gigantic skull ship, ripping cities out of planets, miniaturizing them and placing them on board. But he does so in the spirit of conservation. In his mind, he's committed to the ultimate philanthropic act: saving all of creation. In many ways it's analogous to Noah plucking out two of every animal to ensure their survival, even while knowing that others must perish.

The actor looks at the role as something almost brand new:

It's something of a blank canvas that has allowed a lot of freedom for the writers to world-build. This is a major expansion of the Superman universe and mythology and the civilization that fostered the greatest hero that ever lived.

And about the look of the character:

It's chillingly effective. The first week I turned a corner and one of the cast (members) who hadn't seen the makeup before screamed. A few days later, one of the crew dropped their lunch when they saw me for the first time. Then I knew that we were really on the right track.

Krypton debuts March 23rd on Syfy.
