Lucifer: Tom Ellis on What It Would Take For Him to Return, Concerns

During this week's Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, Tom Ellis reveals what it would take for him to return to Lucifer and his concerns.

Article Summary

  • Tom Ellis would return to Lucifer - but only on this condition.
  • Ellis favors the UK approach of 'leave them wanting more' for series.
  • Back in 2022, Lucifer EPs were open to a reunion, offering ideas like a musical or animated series.
  • Lucifer endures as a benchmark for fan-driven show revival campaigns.

This September will mark three years since the final episode of Tom Ellis-starring Lucifer hit Netflix screens – but well before the final credits rolled on "Partners Til the End," Lucifans have been wondering when/if the popular series could rise again (hey, it is the show that's known for a comeback so amazing that it's become the standard-bearer by which fans of other shows approach their "save our show" campaigns. Checking in with Michael Rosenbaum for the latest episode of Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, the topic of a potential return is addressed – with Ellis revealing the only way he would consider returning to the character as well as his overall concern about not knowing when to let a series rest and move on.

Beginning at around the 1:03:50 mark, Rosenbaum asks Ellis directly if he would come back for a Lucifer revival – either as a two-hour film or some type. "I certainly feel like – on the TV front – we've… like I've said before… we've covered all bases," Ellis responded, adding that the only way he would want to return would be for a film. But even with that, he emphasized that it would have to be a "good" reason to return and not just a case of doing it for the sake of doing it. From there, he discussed the difference in approaches between the U.S. & U.K. – using his 20-episode run on comedian Miranda Hart's popular British sitcom Miranda as an example of "leave them wanting more." Whereas in the U.S., it's about "more and more and more and more" which runs the danger of diluting the work that came before it.

Speaking with Screen Rant to promote the Blu-ray/DVD release back in September 2022, series EPs & showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich made it clear that they would welcome the opportunity to reunite the team for something special. "I mean, I hope so. We loved making the show; we loved working with these people. I think, hopefully at some point, we can find a way to come back, or at least revisit or do something. It was such a great time, it's such a great experience, and we love these people, so never say never," Henderson shared. "My vote is for 'Lucifer: The Musical,' personally, on Broadway. If anybody wants to hashtag that, get that going. [chuckles]," Modrovich added – before Henderson followed with, "I say 'Lucifer: The Animated Series.'" Okay, that last one? We would still be all-in for that one.
