Obi-Wan Kenobi: Sam Witwer Teases Star Wars Series Involvement

As Disney released the teaser for their long-awaited live-action series Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi featuring the triumphant return of Ewan McGregor as the title character, questions naturally turned to what else from the franchise lore will we see? While it's confirmed that Hayden Christensen will also make his franchise return as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, fans will naturally wonder who else will turn up including Obi Wan's other archrival in Maul, originally played by Ray Park in the flesh and later voiced by Sam Witwer.

Maul Since the Events of The Phantom Menace

For those needing to catch up, the original Darth Maul was cut down near the conclusion of The Phantom Menace (1999), but was later to be found alive during the events of the animated series The Clone Wars. Maul would surface in the pre-original trilogy era Rebels meeting his fateful end on Tatooine at the hands of a much older Kenobi that bears more to the Sir Alec Guinness mold during the events of A New Hope. While Disney has largely focused on the eras before the original trilogy and before the sequel trilogy with their TV series, we did see Maul surface again at the conclusion of the live-action feature Solo (2018) making contact with Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke) as leader of the Crimson Dawn.

With Obi-Wan taking place before the original trilogy with the not-yet-grey bearded McGregor, it would make sense if Maul crossed paths again and seek revenge for cutting him in half at the end of their initial fight. Witwer sensing the bombardment of inquiries shared an anecdote on Twitter teasing his involvement on the show while presumably nudging indirectly as his NDA asking fans to "respect my privacy today." Also, keep in mind he has voiced several other characters across the Star Wars franchise. Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres on May 25 on Disney+.
