David Tennant stars in Rivals, a series adaptation of Dame Jilly Cooper's classic bonkbuster novel coming later this year from Disney+/Hulu.
It's finally happened. David Tennant has gone from Doctor Who to Good Omens to his first bonkbuster series, Rivals. The upcoming adaptation of Dame Jilly Cooper's classic 80s bonkbuster novel will air later this year on Hulu/Disney+. As the official synopsis goes, Rivals is set amongst the English elite in the 1980s and the world of independent television production, taking place in the fictional county of Rutshire, a long-standing rivalry between two powerful men is about to boil over. Alex Hassell plays dashing ex-Olympian, Tory Member of Parliament, and incorrigible rake, the dangerously charismatic Rupert Campbell-Black. Tennant plays Rupert's single-mindedly ambitious and egotistical Rutshire neighbour, Lord Tony Baddingham, controller of Corinium Television. A long-simmering power struggle between them threatens to boil over when the two men lock horns over the future of Corinium."
Rivals is part of Cooper's bestselling "Rutshire Chronicles" It follows two powerful men and neighbors – Olympian turned politician Rupert Campbell-Black (Hassell) and television executive Tony Baddingham (Tennant) – who have a longstanding rivalry that finally comes to a head. In the UK, Dame Jilly Cooper is considered "Queen of the Bonkbuster", the genre about awful, glamourous posh people who mess with each other professionally, personally and sexually. Adultery ensues! Lots and lots of it! That's the whole point of the books. They have been so popular that Jilly Cooper was named Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year Honours List for her contributions to Literature and Charity. Unlike other bonkbuster novels, Cooper's often have a wry sense of humour bubbling underneath.
The eight-part adaptation is set to drop later this year on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally. It's produced by ITV Studios shingle Happy Prince and written by Dominic Treadwell-Collins and Laura Wade. Additional cast members include Aidan Turner, Danny Dyer, Lisa McGrillis, Luke Pasqualino, Emily Atack, and Oliver Chris.
