NFL Round-Up: Chiefs Down Pats While Dak Prescott Is Being Underpaid

Last night was the 2017 season opener game that pitted the Kansas City Chiefs against the New England Patriots. The Patriots were at home, where Tom Brady's record was 101-17 — and the Chiefs won.

The game was well balanced for the most part, with the team trading points and going into the fourth quarter with the Patriots up 27-21. But the Pats, who are coming off an epic comeback against the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl, were on the other side of history as the Chiefs rallied to score 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Alex Smith threw for 368 yards and four touchdowns while rookie running back Kareem Hunt put up amazing numbers rushing for 148 yards on 17 carries, 98 yards from five receptions and three touchdowns — one rushing, two receiving.

It was a big night for the Chiefs, who let the NFL know that they are not to be underestimated.

Chiefs

A downside to last night's victory is that the Chiefs have lost safety Eric Berry for the season after he ruptured his Achilles tendon in the fourth quarter while covering Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski on a passing route. Berry has lost significant playing time in the past — he lost part of 2011 after tearing an ACL and most of 2014 after being diagnosed with lymphoma.

The Patriots also came out of the game a person down as wide receiver Danny Amendola left the game with a head injury and is expected to be in the concussion protocol. The team had earlier in the day placed wide receiver Malcom Mitchell on injured reserve, which leaves only three healthy receivers on the roster: Brandin Cooks, Chris Hogan, and the newly acquired Phillip Dorsett. The team may need to add another body this week.

Dak Prescott

In what may be the most impressive depressing graphic ever done by ESPN, they broke down how long other NFL quarterbacks would have to play to make the same amount as the Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback, Dak Prescott, will make for the whole season.

Dak wasn't a high draft pick and is only scheduled to make $547,000 for his second season. By comparison, Detroit Lions start Matthew Stafford, who just signed a new contract, will make that in the first 10 minutes of the first game. Carolina Panthers' Cam Newton and Washington Redskins' Kirk Cousins will both do that in 22 minutes. Even the Miami Dolphins' Jay Cutler, who was pulled out of retirement due to injury, will make that amount with eight minutes to go in his opening game this weekend. Even the Lions kicker, Matt Prater, will make as much as Prescott before halftime of the third game of the season.

The New Orleans Saints will be trying out new long snappers today after it was discovered that the recently acquired Jon Dorenbos will require open heart surgery after an aortic aneurysm. The aneurysm was discovered by Dr. John Amoss during the post-trade physical follow-up. The 37-year-old veteran will be put on the non-football injury list. The discovery likely saved Dorenbos life.

The NFL has suspended former New York Giants kicker Josh Brown for an additional six games for a domestic violence accusation. Brown served a one-game suspension in 2016, but the NFL continued its investigation and found a violation of the personal conduct policy and announced the additional suspension. Brown has accepted the suspension without appeal. Brown was released by the Giants last October and remains unsigned. Though without a team, he will start serving the suspension this weekend.
