The Lonely Island Tap Paul Mather to Showrun Their Series 'Alone Together'
The Lonely Island, the comedy trio of Adam Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, have a series set up at Freeform and have chosen writer/producer Paul Mather (Powerless) to be the showrunner. Alone Together, a new comedy about L.A. millenials has already been renewed for a second season before it's premiere next month. The series was created by Esther Povitsky, Benji Aflalo and Eben Russell and will serve as writers and producers while Povitsky and Aflalo star.
It tells the story of two overlooked millennials misfits who come from very different backgrounds as the navigate the image-conscious L.A. culture. The first season finds the platonic friends shooting a music video, dealing with a line at a Lip Kit pop-up and giving retired life a shot. Esther and Beni, regardless of the situation, will always have each other's backs… in a kind of warped, no-b.s. way that best friends can.
Mather was a writer / co-executive producer on NBC's Powerless and Fox's Cooper Barrett's Guide to Surviving Life. He also created Canadian series Men with Brooms and co-created Dan for Mayor. The Lonely Island are known for their time on Saturday Night Live and films like Hot Rod, McGruber and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.
