Domhnall Gleeson is heading back to the newsroom as the star of the Peacock series The Paper, which is getting ready to film season two. While promoting his upcoming film The Incomer, the actor spoke with Deadline for an update on The Office spinoff that focuses on the daily lives of the staff at The Toledo Truth Teller, and refocusing the once proud, bigger newspaper into a bastion for hyperlocal Ohio journalism. At the end of season one, the staff celebrated its honors at a journalism awards ceremony as the series left a bit on a cliffhanger when Editor-in-Chief Ned Sampson (Gleeson) fell in love with reporter Mare Pritti (Chelsei Frei), whom he took under his wing as the two shared a kiss at the ceremony in private.

The Paper Star Domhnall Gleeson on Getting Back into "Ned" Mode
"I've got the haircut, so I'm getting back into [Ned mode]," Gleeson said. "I had a perm in our film. So, I had a real-life perm, and the perm has now been cut out so I can go back and play Ned. We're reading scripts, and they're really exciting. And I'm incredibly excited to get dubbed back in. It's really nice to do something silly about journalism, which is a very serious thing."
The Ex Machina star also explained why the mockumentary works in keeping the scale small. "I think if we were doing a big paper, you would be getting into all sorts of stuff that would be difficult to talk about in any way that was funny," he said. "The fact that it's a really local place, you can find the small things that mean bigger things. And in a way, that's always the news that really matters, is the one that's just on your street. So yeah, we're loving it. I'm very lucky to be a part of it."

Since The Paper's success on Peacock with its premiere in September 2025 and subsequent renewal, NBC provided its own broadcast debut in November of the same year. The series follows Ned, who accepts the position of The Truth Teller's EIC, but finds himself having to make do with what he has with an inexperienced staff and freelancers as reporters, finding some gems in the process. The Greg Daniels and Michael Koman-created spinoff retained Oscar Nunez, who reprised his role as Oscar Martinez from The Office, working sales and ended up contributing creatively to the Truth Teller. The series, which also stars Sabrina Impacciatore, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, and Tim Key, is available on Peacock.
