It Came! – A Comic Of Splendid Genius That Not Enough People Will Read Today

IMG_0040

Today sees the publication of It Came! A nineteen-fifties grey-black-and-white British B-Movie War Of The Worlds comic from Dan Boultwood that is absolutely, utterly brilliant. Beautifully British – mocking and celebrating simultaneously. A very beautiful comic and a a very funny script. Boutlwood has mostly worked with writer Tony Lee in the past, but on the evidence of this one issue, he's just a good a writer, possibly better.

It lives in a world of John Wyndham and HG Wells where a very proper English village gets and alien robot invasion and reacts in that fashion, while cultures clash within it. It feels like a good Asterix comic, realising that the past is a foreign country. It retains a feeling of warmth and good times, while also delivering action, adventure and a real sense of danger. While also having the sharpest dialogue I've seen for some time. And an overall sense of a place that refuses to change as the world changed, being forced to do so by extreme events. I love it.

Although today also sees the release of March, Infinity, Saga, Walking Dead, True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys, Wolverine & The X-Men, Batman and so many more great comic books, this is the book of the week for me.

And this is an "artifact" to promote the comic, for Bleeding Cool readers. It captures the flavour rather well.

Few people know how good this comic is. It will surprise many. Considering the gap in quality and order numbers, this should be a key comic of note for you speculators out there… and also for people who just like really really good comics. It's nice when the two thing match up so nicely.

Not enough people will read It Came today. Be one of the fortunate few.
