A New Definition Of Batman In Batman #33 By Scott Snyder And Greg Capullo (SPOILERS)

BM-Cv33-8c31dFor the last year, the Batman comic by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo has been running the Zero Year story, in which Edward Nygma, The Riddler, took over the whole of Gotham and made it his plaything. With Batman, Gordon and a few rare friends fighting not only The Riddler but a whole city.

Today's issue brings that to a close. After a battle of brawn, we have a battle of brain. And while you may suspect how this will end, the trick is in getting there.

But the battle, when it comes to a close, is not the focus of the book. We have seen how the Batman, a project of a very focussed mind, can solve an insurmountable problem.  But how did it get there? You can train as much as you like, but what caused the brain of the Batman to be able to do what it does?

The focus for me is away from the mental fisticuffs of two rivals, it's about what Batman is and the choices he has made to be there. About battling demons without as if they were demons within. And then having a way to deal with those inside as well.

It's not uncommon to interpret Batman as the one to cause the craziness of Gotham, villains spontaneously generating when he's around. It's been a popular theory of superheroic deconstruction that Batman is to blame for his own rogues gallery.

But today, there is a different explanation for his role in the DC universe, delivered by Scott Snyder.

The yellow logo on Batman's chest was explained as a kevlar-enhanced way to draw away the firepower from other, less well protectable parts of his body.

In Batman #33, he's taking on the role of that logo himself with Gotham as the rest of the body.

Is this a new definition of Batman? Could it redefine the status of other superheroes as well?
