Professional Overwatch Player Accused Of Cheating Due To Being A Woman
There is nothing, in theory, stopping women from playing on professional e-Sports teams, the way there is in other physical based competitions. There are however pretty significant prejudice and social hurdles that do need to be overcome to stop them from being discouraged from participating in such a male dominated space.
As if to paint that picture, we go to South Korea and Overwatch player Gegury (via PCGamesN). She is actually ranked #1 in the world at playing Zarya, and has been roasting opponents in competition. So much so that several of her opponents have reported her directly to Blizzard Korea for suspected cheating. Several players even bet their Overwatch careers on it, while at least one even threatened to "vist her house with a knife" if she was found cheating.
Gegury has now been cleared of all suspected cheating charges though, ending several careers in the process. So, perhaps this should be a reminder that if you lose to a girl, don't have a hissy fit over it. Gender won't dictate being good at video games, and we can hopefully find a way to encourage more women to be in the upper echelons of competitive professional play.
Here is a video of her absolutely wrecking fools for good measure.
