Could Donny Cates Be Writing An Unannounced Captain America Series For Marvel Legacy? Mindless Speculation…
Bleeding Cool just ran all the Marvel Legacy titles and covers (without the animations) announced on Friday. A number of new titles. Some prominent missing ones. But none more prominent in its absence than Captain America, after the end of Secret Empire in September with Secret Empire Omega. Sam Wilson has his own series, back as The Falcon (and odds are, still written by Nick Spencer). But no comic with Captain America in the title.
So what's going on? Time for some Mindless Speculation!
First, these are all just the ongoing series. No mention of the mini-series. What if there were a six issues series called something like, "The Rehabilitation Of Captain America"? That's how Marvel brought Captain America back after his Civil War death after all.
But who would write it?
Well, this week's Captain America: Steve Rogers written by Secret Empire mastermind Nick Spencer was surprise-co-written by Donny Cates, who has gained an incredible amount of hotness after the success of God Country, Redneck, Baby Teeth and similar expected for Interceptor.
The Marvel model in the past with the likes of Matt Fraction, Kieron Gillen, Margaret Bennett and even Nick Spencer himself was to get them to co-write a book with the series' previous writer. How much co-writing was going on is unclear, in publicity terms it has been a way to reassure retailers and readers that the book was in safe hands, before accepting the newcomer.
Could Donny Cates be the man to rehabilitate Captain America in the light of Marvel Legacy? Could his popularity outpace the Nazi taint?
Maybe we'll find out at San Diego Comic-Con – where what is actually happening in October will be properly announced.
