So If This Archie Character Doesn't Die – What Happens To Them Exactly? (Archie Comics #22 LAST PAGE SPOILERS)
Once upon a time, Archie Comics gave the impression that there was going to be a major death in the regular Archie Comics comic book line, with a central Riverdale character, with the Over The Edge storyline. Then, just as FOC came around, Archie Comics leaked the news that actually, no, no one was going to die, but the person who was not going to die was Betty Cooper.
Archie has done tragedies on this level before, but they're always out of main continuity. What was the pressure like pitching this storyline knowing how it would impact on the current Archie universe in such a huge way?
Waid: It's funny, because I feel like I've spent more time explaining that we're NOT killing anyone than talking about the real story here—which is to showcase how these characters handle themselves under extreme, stressful circumstances.
Tomorrow now sees that very issue in which Betty Cooper does not die, Archie Comics #22. And some retailers who believed the original hype but didn't see the "walking back" are a little perturbed. So what does happen then? Well, some frustrated so-and-so appears to have leaked the evidence…
"Because, Betty Cooper, we've had to amputate your arms!"
Sorry, it's an old joke, couldn't resist. But that seems to be where the comic is going, Betty Cooper suffering paralysis of her legs, in Riverdale comic books to come. Say, I know there's a confirmed Betty And Veronica And Harley Quinn And Poison Ivy comic coming, and a rumoured Archie/Batman '66 comic, but what chance now of a Betty Cooper/Barbara Gordon Oracle crossover? Or a Birds Of Prey/Riverdale parallel with Betty playing the Barbara role?
Just a thought…
Archie Comics #22 by Mark Waid and Pete Woods is published tomorrow by Archie Comics.
