Family Fun At The LEGO Scooby Doo! Blowout Beach Bash SDCC Panel

Sunday is family programming day at SDCC every year, so what better way to kick it off than to attend the LEGO Scooby Doo! Blowout Beach Bash panel and watch the movie with my 12-year-old son? The movie features Scooby and the Gang in their second direct-to-video Lego movie release.

The movie finds the Scooby Gang trying to prove they can enjoy themselves without having to investigate a mystery, so they head to a beach town to attend its annual beach bash. Of course, wherever the Mystery Machine goes, trouble is sure to be waiting for them. The gang has to investigate the mystery of the ghost pirates attacking the town, and at the same time try to see if they can behave like normal cool kids. Like the beach movies of the 1960s, there is even a song and dance number.

Once the movie finished, it was time for the panel to take the stage. Appearing on the panel were Director Ethan Spalding, Producer Rick Morales, Grey Griffin (Daphne), and Matthew Lillard (Shaggy).

Going straight to audience questions, one person wanted to know what world the Lego Scooby movies exist in. Morales said that Lego Scooby was a thing of its own, but that it was based on the classic Scooby Doo cartoons. One of the panels funniest moments was when a little kid asked Lillard to do one of his lines from Scream, "I'll be right back," in his Shaggy voice. Lillard complied, but also jokingly questioned, "What is wrong with America?"

So now down to the most important thing: how was the movie? To be fair, I'm not the audience the movie is aimed at. I will say there were certainly some moments that an adult would enjoy; however, the most important opinion belongs to my son. As soon as the panel ended, he asked if I would buy the movie for him on Blu-ray as soon as it comes out. Lucky for him, the film is out now and available wherever you buy your movies. So it seems if you have a kiddo who likes LEGO and Scooby Doo, this might be a perfect choice.
