Did You Catch 'The Shining' Easter Egg in Coco?
There are a couple of places you don't expect a Stephen King homage to end up, and one of them is a kids' movie. But it turns out that isn't quite the case. There is an Easter egg referencing The Shining in Coco, and it looks like no one has noticed yet. In an interview with Yahoo News, co-director Lee Unkrich said where to find a homage to the The Shining in the movie. It happens when Miguel is chasing Dante around the backstage as he is searching for Ernesto de la Cruz. There is a painting in the background with the famous towns.
"That's a Día de los Muertos-inspired version of the twin girls from The Shining," Unkrich confirms. "I don't know why no one has caught it yet, because I didn't think it was the difficult one in the movie! I always try to do these in a way that's pretty obscure."
It turns out that there could be more references hidden within the movie that the animators managed to sneak by their bosses. Lee isn't willing to tell anyone where those Easter eggs are, though, saying, "I'm just going to give you the one for today."
Summary: Despite his family's baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector, and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel's family history.
Coco, directed by Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, stars Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal, Alanna Ubach, and Benjamin Bratt. Grab it on Digital HD on February 13th and on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD now.
