All The Infinity Warps From Soldier Supreme #1: Advance Review

Gamora has used the Infinity Gauntlet to reduced the universe by half, just like her dad. The difference is, she didn't kill anyone, she merged one life with another. So everyone gets warped, trapped together, helping her keep an eye on certain folk as well. And for some, that is a more significant disparate creation than others, such as Soldier Supreme, Doctor Strange and Captain America, warped together as Soldier Supreme.

The first issue of a short mini-series running alongside the Infinity Wars series sees the creation of a super soldier, Stephen Rogers, turned into a sorceror instead by a Professor Erskine who appears to have been warped with The Enchantress and devoted to the occult rather than science.

But we then get to see him as an effective tool against the Nazis, especially with a leader so obsessed with the occult. And, yes, while Hitler gets mentioned, we don't get to learn who Adolf was a warped with. I'm sure you could conjure up your own. Same with Roosevelt. But as well as Professor Erskine, we have friends of the Soldier Supreme…

Dum Dum Duggan and Nick Fury have become Dum Dum Fury, while Wong and Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier have also been merged…

While Dormammu and the Red Skull are now also the same being. This is the game we play, though be warned, play it too much and it becomes real. If anything, Gerry Duggan is rather restrained in this regard, we could have had all manner of World War 2 types shoved together, with the reading experience resorting to spot-the-reference. And I would have. Instead, we get a war story where tropes are subverted, twisted and followed through with new surface details. And the original Captain America's story plays out in much the way as it originally did – including the Winter Soldier plugin.

Andy Kubert does most of the work selling this, tapping into a style in parts before his time, in others back up to date. It's a good trick, and Matthew Wilson helps the colour, especially in the forest winter scenes, exude the bleakness of war, even when it's away from the front, while still providing the fire and the fireworks of the magic.
