Penny Dreadful: City of Angels: Showtime Greenlights 1938 L.A.-Set Sequel Series

If you're one of "The Dreadfuls" then you know if there was any series that would find a way to rise from the dead, it was Showtime's Penny Dreadful – and you'd be right! The cable network has given the go-ahead for sequel series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, from Penny Dreadful creator/writer/executive producer John Logan – who will serve those same roles in the new series. Set to begin production in 2019, Kidding's Michael Aguilar is also on board to produce the project.

We will now be grappling with specific historical and real world political, religious, social and racial issues. In 1938, Los Angeles was facing some hard questions about its future and its soul. Described as a spiritual descendant of the story set in Victorian-era London, the new series (or "chapter") is being promoted as having a new vision, with new characters and storylines. Showtime's Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is set in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension. Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil, the series will "explore an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of that period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop."

Logan and Aguilar are set to executive produce Penny Dreadful: City of Angels alongside original series' executive producers Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris, both from Neal Street Productions; with James Bagley serving as co-executive producer.
