DC and Marvel Level-Peg, Dynamite Third-Best Selling Comics Publisher in December 2018 Marketshare Per Capita
We haven't done one of these for a while. But with the observation that DC Comics have reduced the number of titles they are publishing of late, we thought we'd run a Marketshare-Per-Capita chart.
We've already looked at publisher marketshare in the North American direct market of comic book shops for December 2018, with Marvel Comics dominating. But if you divide the marketshare by the number of individual titles published that month, you get a different picture. Firstly DC Comics beats Marvel in terms of MPC for dollars earnt although not in units sold. But the difference is far tighter.
The biggest difference is Dynamite, which rockets to the third biggest MPC publisher in comics. They may publish few titles, but on average they outdo Image Comics with those titles.
The other big jump is Valiant Entertainment in fifth place, a non-Premier publisher that, per title, beats out Premier publishers IDW, Dark Horse and Boom.
This may mean certain publishers deserve being viewed in a different light. For retailers, a Marvel and DC title is likely to make them as much money as the other, while they are more likely to sell a Dynamite title than an Image title (though Image makes them more money). And Valiant titles outdo IDW, Boom and Dark Horse – but often get forgotten. Worth knowing?
If nothing else, it's certainly a conversation point. I'll try and keep this up going forward.
