Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker Poster Released at D23
Star Wars fans were teased with a beautiful, classic image that has been chosen for the poster of Star Wars: Episode IX: Rise of Skywalker.
Let's break down what we see here. First, and most obviously, there's the central image of Rey (Daisy Ridley) battling Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). The lightsabers drawn and in combat immediately evoke previous posters where the Jedi weapons present central light sources, and especially in combat between the forces of good and evil, like the Return of the Jedi Special Edition and Revenge of the Sith posters. The symmetry here couldn't be more clear: this is going to be as climactic a battle as Luke vs. Vader and Obi-Wan vs. Anakin.
The good vs. evil is on full display here, too, with the blue vs. red the main contrast in that central image. Unlike The Last Jedi poster where Rey and Kylo stood back to back, sabers at the ready but not fighting each other, and everything bathed in red, this is the two of them in conflict, with the literal battle between light and darkness in the balance.
And then, of course, there's that looming image of Emperor Palpatine. Going back to the teaser trailer's giant reveal that "No one's ever really gone" followed up with an evil laugh from ol' Sheev himself, it appears the Emperor's presence will quite literally loom large over the entire storyline.
But what's that they're fighting on? Again, following clues from the teaser trailer, I'm willing to put money it is some bit of destroyed Death Star. But, looking again at its shape, and I can't get away from the feeling. . . that looks a lot like a broken lightsaber hilt.
I'm not saying they've gone Ant-Man and are tiny and fighting on the broken blade of Luke's saber that they split in half in The Last Jedi, but I am saying that shape was likely chosen for a reason.
All mysteries will be revealed as we learn more at D23 and when Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker hits theaters December 20.
