"The Umbrella Academy" Season 2: Episode #206/#207 Prep Underway; Justin H. Min Posts "Quality" BTS Clip [PREVIEW]
More than month after the Hargreeves' family's real-world alter egos made it "super official" that production on the second-season of Netflix's live-action adaptation of Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba's comic book series The Umbrella Academy was well underway, writer/showrunner Steve Blackman (Fargo, Altered Carbon) and Justin H. Min are offering up some more production updates.
In the first Instagram post, Blackman throws some love his creative team's way while also giving fans the heads-up that prep work on Episodes #206 and #207 was underway. Following that, Min posts what might just be the literal-with-a-capital-"L" definition of a "behind the scenes video" – though it could be the opening to a hard-hitting expose on the secrets of Robert Sheehan's set chair:
Last month, Blackman posted an image of not only the first slate of filming but also a "family photo" of the show's writers, actors, and artists (minus Min, which really does seem pretty ironic…). Though production was expected to start in May, a June start isn't expected to impact the series' early 2020 return.
Here's a look at the cast's announcement video for the start of table reads on the appropriately-titled "Right Back Where We Started," directed by Sylvain White (The Americans, upcoming Amazing Stories):
The Umbrella Academy was given a 10-episode second season order in April 2019 – with Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, and Justin Min reprising their roles, with additional casting still to be announced.
Blackman returns as showrunner and executive producer, with Jeff F. King, Mike Richardson, and Keith Goldberg also returning to executive produce. Way and Bá will co-executive produce.
The Umbrella Academy is a 10-episode series based on the graphic novels of the same name created and written by Way, illustrated by Ba, and published by Dark Horse Comics. Netflix's adaptation follows the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes (The Umbrella Academy) — Spaceboy, The Kraken, The Rumor, The Séance, and Number Five — as they work together to solve their father's mysterious death while coming apart at the seams due to their divergent personalities and abilities.
On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a billionaire industrialist, who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his "children" to save the world.
But not everything went according to plan.
In their teenage years, the family fractured and the team disbanded. Now, the six surviving thirty-something members reunite upon the news of Hargreeves' passing. Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Vanya and Number Five work together to solve a mystery surrounding their father's death. But the estranged family once again begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.
NOTE: Out of respect for those who are still watching the first season, we're going with descriptions that are still set for the first season (with some necessary adjustments):
Netflix's version of the Hargreeves family includes: Ellen Page (X-Men: Days of Future Past) as sister Vanya, who appears (????) to manifest no super powers but has an amazingly strong interest in music; Tom Hopper (Game of Thrones) as Luther/Spaceboy, leader of The Umbrella Academy; Robert Sheehan (Bad Reputation) as shoeless speaker-with-the-dead Klaus Hargreeves/The Séance; Emmy Raver-Lampman (Wicked) as Allison/The Rumor, who can alter reality with her lies; David Castaneda (Blindspot) as Diego/The Kraken, the reckless and rebellious member of the family; Aidan Gallagher (Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn) as Number Five/The Boy, the family's time-travelling, perpetually young brain; and Justin H. Min (Dating After College) as Ben Hargreeves / Number Six / The Horror, a boy who possesses monsters from other dimensions under his skin.
Colm Feore (House of Cards) as world-renowned billionaire industrialist and eccentric inventor Sir Reginald Hargreeves; Jordan Claire Robbins as more-than-she-appears family matriarch Grace Hargreeves; and Adam Godley (Breaking Bad) as the voice of Pogo, a genetically engineered, tweed jacket-wearing, talking chimpanzee who is also the family advisor and mentor.
The Umbrella Academy also stars award-winning singer/actress Mary J. Blige (Mudbound) as ruthless, time traveling hitwoman Cha-Cha; Cameron Britton (Mindhunter) as her deadly efficient partner Hazel; Ashley Madekwe (Revenge) as Detective Patch, a driven, fast riser within the police department investigating a series of murders – and The Academy; John Magaro (The Big Short) as Leonard Peabody, who begins to take music lessons from Vanya and sees something special in this constantly dismissed wallflower, and Kate Walsh (Grey's Anatomy) as The Handler, the head of the Commission and Number Five's former boss.
