BC Mag #3: Reviving The Horror Genre

revival coverBleeding Cool Magazine article by James Kuhoric

Horror is in my blood. Always has been and always will be. I started a lifelong obsession with the genre which began with Riddley Scott's Alien and has been a dark part of my tastes and preferences ever since. Horror comics were some of the first that I went in search of alongside the standards of youth celebrating spandex and fantasy heroism. And I've read the gamut of the groundbreaking to the utterly soul crushingly stereotypical when it comes to today's horror comic offerings.

Horror is such a challenging genre, in that everything of the supernatural can be lumped into it, but so little of it is truly frightening. Most horror is full of the standard retreaded monster tropes and clichés that are so well worn they lack originality and even a spark of true ingenuity. It's a real challenge to find the gems in the genre, the books that stand out and deliver the sublime chill the masters can deliver. Authors like King, Hill, and Barker are the modern mainstays, delivering tales that take you out of your comfort zone and make you feel the uncomfortable lump in your stomach and the dread that whatever frights have led you to that point in the book, that the real horrors are yet to come.
