BC Mag #3: The Doctor Is In

Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, reportage of the event disrupted television schedules around the globe. Across the Atlantic, Britain's BBC were forced to delay their evening programming, due to an extended evening news, and push back the broadcast of a new science-fiction series. This was the 23rd November, 1963, and the show was Doctor Who. It was no less portentous a debut than the show deserved, as it has gone on to become the longest-running science fiction series on television, and a cornerstone not only of cultdom, but of the very idea of Britishness.
That inauspicious first episode introduced audiences to the Doctor — a cranky, eccentric and slightly threatening old man; played by veteran character actor William Hartnell. It is revealed that he is a time-travelling alien — apparently a fugitive — who is accompanied by his granddaughter, Susan.
