Booze Geek – Master Of Pumpkins
By Dylan Gonzalez
Beer: Master of Pumpkins
Brewery: Troegs Independent Brewing
ABV: 7.9%
With the Halloween spirit flying through the air, it is only fitting that I have littered my fridge with
pumpkin beer. I have already explored the Two Road's Roadsmary's Baby, now I have moved onto Troeg's Master of Pumpkins.
The Master of Pumpkins was a copper brown color and produced a thin head. It disappeared pretty quickly, but left a ring of lacing for a long time. There was some feint carbonation. It gave off the scents of vanilla, nutmeg, clove and a little bit of funk.
Flavorwise, there was not much of a nutmeg presence, nor cinnamon. In fact, I was a bit surprised to find how thin the beer was on flavor. I got just a hint of a pumpkin character. I found there to be more malt than anything, and it had a breadiness to it as well. The finish was a mixture of funk, mild booze and malt. On the palate, it felt comfortable enough.
Master of Pumpkins (a misleading title) unfortunately left a lot to be desired. If you are seeking out a pumpkin beer that does not pack a potent flavor, then you might enjoy this, but there much better pumpkin beers out there to seek out than this.
What To Drink This To:
Master of Pumpkins immediately made me thought of Metallica's classic album Master of Puppets. Though the band had already broken out with the two hit albums Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning, Puppets would go on to be a landmark album in the heavy metal genre. Sporting classics such as "Battery", "The Thing That Should Not Be" and matching song of the same name, it displayed a new direction for Metallica, one of evolution and originality. In particular, the instrumental "Orion" stands out to me for showcasing not just the band's abilities as a whole, but those of late bass player Cliff Burton. While Ride the Lightning will remain my favorite Metallica record, Master of Puppets still shines bright amongst the heavy metal classics. Drink a Master and listen to Master.
