Another French Satirical Magazine Cover Caused Outrage – This Time In China
This is the latest cover to Fluide Glacial, asking if the Chinese influence in France is too much, and citing the racist phrase "Yellow Peril". The cover is even less subtle, showing the French natives sown and out, racist Chinese caricatures being carried in pagodas through a Paris being transformerd with Chinese signs and tastes, and the caricature even "stealing one of our women" trope.
The Chinese media, who haven't exactly been "Je Suis Charlie" have been condemning it. The government controlled Global Times have called it indecent and wonder if the magazine is trying to emulate Charlie Hebdo for attention's sake.
In France and the rest of Europe, people used to take a secular attitude over free speech, but now they seem to see it through the lens of religion, and are even willing to take fresh risks.
If European people and Muslims want to defend their different freedoms to the hilt, then we may witness a century of "holy war."
Europe had better back off somewhat.
The editor of the magazine has said that it went to press three weeks ago, before the Charlie Hebdo attacks, and invites the Chinese government to actually read the magazine, as it might make them laugh…
And the topic of the cartoon was more to do with China being the country of note at this year's Angouleme comic book art festival…
