Ascender #2 Brings Dad In to the Fight Against Mother
The second installment of Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen's Ascender picks up immediately where issue #1 left off, with Mila finding her father's long lost robotic dog named Bandit. In the previous issue, Mila resents her nomadic life and plays with the idea of giving in to the religious heretics of the anti-technology fanatic Mother. Her father strictly forbids this allegiance, and it isn't until the reunion with his lost tech that Mila really begins to learn who her father truly is.
Meanwhile, Mother asserts her dominance on the robot-hunting planet of Gnish, the only monarchy in the galaxy. She allows these people to live a semi-peaceful existence in exchange for their compliance in her pursuit to destroy technology. Lemiere and Nguyen do their best storytelling of the issue, and artist Steve Wands brings their intentions to a level resembling a Lovecraftian horror as Mother plucks out her own eye and gives it to an octopus-like monster. This creature grows, morphs, and expands until it eventually grows enough ocular power to keep full surveillance on the incompetent Gnish King.
The issue felt like it ended too quickly as a result of the writer's fast pacing but never felt rushed, rather I was pulled immediately back into the story and was disappointed when it ended. Again, Wands' artwork implemented soft watercolors and lines but stayed away from a messy feeling that can sometimes be the downfall of this specific medium. The characters are progressing towards a shared conflict as Mother gets more and more terrifying, while Mila and her father get more and more desperate to avoid her. With only three more issues left in this sequel to Descender, the action is guaranteed to keep coming until the witch Mother is hopefully defeated.
Issue #3 is expected to release June 26th, and with there still being questions about Mila's mother and what the return of Bandit means for the protagonists, make sure you add this summer story to your hold as it's definitely not something you would want to miss out on.
