Booze Geek: Valhalla Red IPA

redipaBy Dylan Gonzalez;

Beer: Valhalla Red IPA

Brewery: Elysian

It seems like Elysian Brewery is making beers just for me to review. This week, and perhaps just in time for a film featuring a certain Norse god, I review Elysian's Valhalla Red IPA.

Valhalla produces a thick and long lasting head when poured. It is a deep red color, almost bricklike in its coloration. It has somewhat of a rustic appearance to it.

I think that Valhalla's chief strength lays in its scent. It produces a wonderfully sweet and citrusy smell, very easy on the nose. No doubt this comes from the Citra hops. Its taste is similar. The hops and malts here come together to create a distinctive bitter and sweet mix. There is a very slight trace of a roasted flavor, but it is the bitterness and sweetness that really come out. It is an interesting combination, but one that may not work for everyone.

Valhalla is smooth on the palate and leaves bitterness on the tongue. Overall, this is a good beer. As stated, the hops and malt blend provide for a distinctive taste.

What to Drink This To:

With Thor: The Dark World right around the corner, head out to your local store and see if you can grab a few bottles of this. I think this would be an ale worthy for the God of Thunder. You could even pregame a little before seeing the film when it comes out next week.
