DC Comics Mix Up 1:100 Covers For Death Metal #1
Today sees the release of Dark Nights: Death Metal #1, one of DC's biggest selling comic books of the year. We ran a few fun teasers yesterday that seemed rather popular. In order to help DC reach those heady heights, they offered a number of tiered covers and promotions, such as the 1:100 B&W Sketch variant cover and the midnight launch variant.
Unfortunately, what with the shutdown and the new distributors and printers, something seems to have gone a little wrong and DC Comics switched the two around, including their availability.
So any retailer who ordered a hundred copies of Death Metal #1 got one copy of the colour midnight launch variant instead. Those who ordered the midnight variant, got the black-and-white sketch cover instead.
Which means the B&W sketch cover is worth far less and the colour worth far more. Copies of the black-and-white have pre-sold on eBay for up to $150 – but are now rather common and are now selling for less than cover price. While the colour version, which was selling for under cover price are now selling on eBay for $60.
How did this happen? Well, it seems that at some point, the UPC barcodes got swapped around. The problem has been reported for those still distributed by Diamond and for those getting DC titles through UCS and Lunar. No response to retailers who have addressed their concerns… Developing.
