DC Comics' New Gay Superhero, The Ray – In His Own Words
It was announced last year the DC Comics would be adding, and reinventing, classic superhero The Ray to a new CW Seed animated series, Freedom Fighters, and that the character would now be a young gay man.
But before that airs, the character made his debut in a new Justice League one-shot by Steve Orlando and Stephen Byrne, published today. A young man who has spent his life in the dark, unable to experience any form of light, until he breaks out as a young man. And explodes in a dazzling ball of light. So that's sub-text made text, right here, a superhero speciality.
And we learn his new supporting cast, Caden Zapote, the boy he injured as a child, now a young politician. And himself gay – amongst other things.
Very visible – while The Ray remains invisible. More of that subtext made text again. Looks like our new hero needs a hero of his own.
…before settling into his new lifestyle. As in, one not trapped inside a house in the dark.
Justice League America: The Ray: Rebirth #1 is published today by DC Comics. The Ray will appear in upcoming issues of Justice League Of America.
