Edith Pritchett Wins Observer/Cape Graphic Story Prize, On Display at Orbital Comics

This year's Observer/Cape graphic short story prize has been awarded to An Artistic Odyssey by Edith Pritchett, a unanimous decision by the judges.

The judges were made up of graphic novelist Posy Simmonds, Jonathan Cape publisher, Dan Franklin, creative director of Vintage Books, Suzanne Dean, and comics curator and Man At The Crossroads, Paul Gravett, comic book journalist and critic Rachel Cooke and novelist Michel Faber.

The winning entry, runner-up Customer Complaint 40569 by Jac Clinch, and other commended entries are currently on display in the gallery of Orbital Comics in London.

The Jonathan Cape/Observer/Comica Graphic short story prize, now in its 11th year, is intended for up-and-coming comic book creators and cartoonists. The winner will receive a cheque for £1,000 and his or her work will appear in the Observer in print and online. The runner-up will receive £250 and have their work published online.

Past winners and runners-up include Stephen Collins, Isabel Greenberg and Fumio Obata. 2009's runner-up Joff Winterhart is seeing his 2012 graphic novel, Days of the Bagnold Summer, which expanded on his winning entry, is to be made into a film by The Inbetweeners' Simon Bird.

Entries are always four-page comics designed to run over a double-page spread in the Observer New Review. Time to get started on 2019's entry?
